The Art of Self Preservation

The Art of Self Preservation: Instruction and Motivation for Making Journaling a Part of Your Life

Taught by Nathalie Hardy

Have you ever felt like this? A lot of people want to document their daily lives, but they don't know where to start. The Art of Self Preservation is designed specifically to encourage and empower you to cultivate a life-long habit of journaling so you can preserve your stories—and also perhaps your sanity.

Journals left behind are such a gift to future generations. Who wouldn't love to find words, in handwritten scrawl, upon the passing of a loved one? And truthfully, the practice of journaling is a gift to the writer as well. In this class, you will be encouraged to develop a habit of journaling to preserve your personal stories because your stories matter. Taking time to record and reflect on them is not only worthwhile but necessary to achieve a strong sense of self.

The Art of Self Preservation is taught by Nathalie Hardy, a nationally award-winning journalist who takes notes and tells stories for a living. Here's what she has to say about why she created this class:

"I feel called to take it a step deeper and teach you to not only tell your stories, but also to value them; and more importantly, to value yourself. I sincerely believe women in our country are suffering from an epidemic of low self-esteem. After spending most of my adult life as a self-help junkie, I finally dove under the jargon to discover the true meaning of self-help. While that doesn't make me a therapist by any means, it does make me qualified to share what I've learned—to lead a conversation where we can learn from each other."

"You is kind. You is smart. You is important."

~ Aibileen Clark, character in The Help by Kathryn Stockett

To prepare for Nathalie’s class, please gather the following:

  • a basic tool kit
Note: you only need that if you want to decorate your journal, which, of course I highly encourage!
  • a journal of your choice (In the classroom you’ll find suggestions)
  • your favorite journaling pen
  • a desire to live a more authentic, abundant life

This is really is a use-your-stash kind of class. I like to embellish my journal as I am writing in it so it reflects my life at that time. Which means I have plenty of blank composition books that I meant to decorate and didn’t. The process works because of what you write inside the pages so keep it simple or go all out, either way don’t let not having the perfect journal stop you from starting!
